A CASE STUDY:

Nothing Serious

Reading for fun again.

My Role

Founder
Lead Designer

The Team

Me, Myself
and I

Tools Used

Figma
Adobe CC

Duration

3 Days Ideation
3 Days Prototyping

My Process

Empathize

I discover the genuine needs and wants of the user through research and interviews. I consider what they say, think, do and feel.

Define

I decide which problems we will focus on by creating user personas, user stories, user journey maps, and problem statements.

Ideate

This is where the fun begins. We take our list of problems and begin to find solutions. We stay open-minded and focus on the user.

Prototype

Creation begins! Using Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite, we start actually building our solutions with pixel-perfect prototypes.

Test

We put our designs in front of stakeholders and users in the real world. Our user testing helps us polish the product to near perfection.

THE CHALLENGE:

Get people reading light, fun, short stories instead of being depressed by the news.

Takeaways from User Research

INSIGHT #1

People are sad.

Depression among adults in the United States tripled in the early 2020 months of the global coronavirus pandemic—jumping from 8.5 percent before the pandemic to a staggering 27.8 percent. More than half of Americans say the news causes them stress, and many report feeling anxiety, fatigue or sleep loss as a result, the survey shows. Yet one in 10 adults checks the news every hour, and fully 20% of Americans report “constantly” monitoring their social media feeds—which often exposes them to the latest news headlines, whether they like it or not.

I realized people were in the habit of checking the news and reading but it was all negative/depressing topics. Especially during the pandemic, people associate reading with being down, depressed and discouraged. But historically, reading was designed to teach or entertain. So I wanted to build something that brought that back!

INSIGHT #2

People don't read.

Between 2003 and 2016, the amount of time that the average American devoted to reading for personal interest on a daily basis dropped from 0.36 hours to 0.29 hours. It would seem that reading in America has declined even further in the past decade.

I realized that if there were an easy way to read stories that left the reader feeling good and inspired, it could get people in general to read more.

INSIGHT #3

No one has time.

During qualitative research, I found a big reason people weren’t reading as much was they felt they didn’t have time to commit to a full book and didn’t like having to start and stop over and over again.

I realized if there were short stories that were genuinely enjoyable but could be completely absorbed in under 20 minutes, people could get a sense of accomplishment by reading something from start to finish in one sitting. We don’t only have full-length films for this reason. Sometimes we don’t want to commit to anything more than a mindless 27-minute sitcom. Or 10, 27-minute long sitcoms in a row…

The Results

A fun and engaging app that allows people to read enjoyable stories in under 20 minutes whenever they want.

Final Thoughts

Nothing Serious was a fun personal project that helped me learn the ins and outs of crowdfunding. It was nice to think through every aspect of the business and not just the design work. it gave me compassion for stakeholders and founders who would hire a designer like me to help them build their dream.
